I started attending Jude's Saturday morning classes at the Belvedere Hotel in Mt. Vernon (8:15AM weekly) when I first started working on Givefit. It was one of the first free yoga classes I attended, and Jude was the first instructor to embrace the concept of Givefit.
Jude Asher has been doing Yoga in Baltimore since the 80's after a friend invited her to a Kundalini class. She had a good time and kept going. After a while she was mentored by some local teachers leading to getting her certification at Yama Studios, which is currently stationed at Ruscombe Mansion. Jude's graduating class at Yama Studio was about 20 women and the teacher certification included a lot of reading and writing in addition to yoga.
Before starting Be More Yoga in Mt. Vernon, she taught at Merritt where her favorite class was with a group of older women, also known as the "The Butt Kicking Grannies." Merritt accidentally tried to cancel the class after misreading some headcount numbers and the grannies went ballistic, barraged Merritt with emails and complaints, and claimed they'd be starting a protest. The class was back up the next week.
After teaching at Merritt, Jude started the Be More Yoga class about 6 years ago and a solid group of regular yogis have been going since day 1. Jude refers to these folks as her "front-row people." These are the same people that welcomed me to their weekly post-yoga breakfast tradition at Tavern on the Hill.
Jude's advice to beginners:
"Don't be afraid, trust yourself, don't worry about what others are doing, and don't forget to breath."
When I asked her how yoga could be used as an even better healing agent for our society: "Start with the kids."
