What Are Relationships?

Relationships are the connections that bind people, either in friendships or romantic partnerships. Relationships can also be defined as a person’s relationship with their family or community. The nature of a person’s relationships can change over the course of their life, and some are more stable than others.

A healthy relationship is based on mutual trust and respect. It also involves a balanced amount of giving and receiving, though what this looks like in each relationship will vary. Relationships that are characterized by a lack of trust, on the other hand, can be difficult and harmful to both people involved.

People often find themselves in relationships they don’t fully enjoy for one reason or another. They may feel pressure to marry someone because of their culture or religion, or they may be in a “good-on-paper” relationship where the guy is attractive and has a great job—but they don’t really like him.

When problems arise in a relationship, it’s important to take responsibility and apologize for mistakes when you’ve made them. This can go a long way toward healing the relationship and showing your partner that you’re serious about it. However, it’s also important to recognize that some issues can’t be solved, and that it’s okay to walk away from a relationship that isn’t healthy for you.

In addition to the emotional bonding that occurs in a relationship, physical intimacy is also important. Whether this is simply holding hands, hugging, or kissing, regular touch helps increase levels of the hormone oxytocin, which promotes bonding and attachment.
