Writing About United Nations Issues
An issue is a current topic, sometimes controversial, that’s being discussed. When someone says, “He has some issues,” they mean he has problems that are emotional or personal. The word is also used to refer to a problem that needs solving, such as a health care crisis or a school project.
The United Nations has many issues that it is working on, from conflict resolution and peacekeeping to education and the empowerment of women to the peaceful use of atomic energy. The organization is well-known for its efforts to improve people’s lives around the globe, but many don’t realize that it is involved in a variety of other important matters.
To write an article about an issue, start by researching the topic and creating an outline. Gather articles, facts and statistics to support your opinion on the subject. Create an opening paragraph that states your point and clearly defines the issue. You may want to include a quotation from an expert in the field or a statistic that supports your argument.
Then draft an introduction that grabs the reader’s attention. Then write the body of your article, ensuring that each paragraph supports your point and is tied to the overall topic. When you are finished, reread your article to make sure that it flows well and all of the points are connected in a logical way. Finally, write a conclusion that summarizes your opinion on the issue and suggests a possible solution.
