Home improvement is the process of renovating or making additions to a house or other residential building. These projects may include maintenance or repair work, adding rooms/spaces, rewiring, installing new appliances, painting, and other cosmetic improvements. Many homeowners carry out home improvement projects for personal satisfaction or to make the house more attractive to potential buyers.
Some common home improvement projects are installing energy efficient windows, doors, and shingles; replacing old flooring with hardwood or tile; adding solar panels; and adding insulation. These upgrades can lower utility bills and increase comfort, while reducing the impact on the environment.
Small, inexpensive home decorating projects can add a fresh, updated look to any room. For example, a fresh coat of paint can dramatically alter the appearance of an interior or exterior. Other cheap, quick fixes include refinishing wood furniture, re-screening the porch, or applying limewash to brick walls.
When selecting a contractor to perform your home improvement project, consider their reputation and experience. The price of a contractor’s services may vary widely, so it is important to receive multiple estimates before selecting a company. You should also check that a company is licensed, insured, and has good business references. The Home Improvement Law requires a written contract for any work performed on your house. It should contain a timeline for the work to be completed, a payment schedule, and as many specifics as possible about the project (types or brands of materials). A deposit cannot exceed 1/3 of the total contract price.
